Obama's Gun Control Plan
The 23 executive actions to reduce gun violence was signed by president Barack Obama on January 16, 2013. This is his proposal and answer to the recent mass murders that occurred in 2012. The first two actions are:
1. Issue a Presidential Memorandum to require federal agencies to make relevant data available to the federal background check system.
2. Address unnecessary legal barriers, particularly relating to the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act, that may prevent states from making information available to the background check system.
The rest of the actions are similar to these. As a whole they are intended to keep weapons out of the hands of the mentally unstable or criminals. Similar to a driver's license, the purchase of a weapon will have many steps that a person must pass or complete. In addition, the laws of firearms could become very strict, limiting the amount of damage someone could cause with them. Obama is reaching out to the citizens of the U.S. who have lost family members to violent attacks, and this is his way of trying to protect citizens from further harm. This document is very important in the future of firearms. If it is passed, then gun control would become a strict and serious matter. In addition, this could ultimately redefine the second amendment. Americans have a right to bear arms, however if this bill is passed then it could lead to the ban of guns altogether. Many people would argue this goes against the second amendment. The future of firearms in America depends on this document.
