Annie Oakley's Letter
Annie Oakley
On April 5, 1898 Annie Oakley sent a letter to President William Mckinley of the United States. In her letter she said that herself and 50 other sharpshooter women would offer support to the government if the U.S. were to go to war with Spain. Annie Oakley was a famous sharshooter in the late 1800's. She was the best female shooter, becoming a star in Wild West shows. She was one of the first women to become a superstar in the U.S. One of her most famous tricks was when she would shoot a playing card in half, and as it fell she would shoot the half again and again beofre it hit the ground, from 90 feet away. Her letter is important because it expresses the views of firearms to women at that time. She wanted to be out doing the same thing as men, like shooting. There were many other women who found shooting entertaining, too. They shot guns for competitions, shows, and even jsut for fun. Many women of that time enjoyed and used guns. The attitudes towards guns in the 1800's by many females was exciting and adventurous.
“Aim at a high mark and you will hit it. No, not the first time, not the second time and maybe not the third. But keep on aiming and keep on shooting for only practice will make you perfect. Finally you’ll hit the bull’s-eye of success.” -Annie Oakley
