Wayne LaPierre, CEO and
Executive Vice President of the NRA since 1991
The National Rifle Association, NRA, was founded on November 17, 1871 by William Conant Church and George Wood Wingate. They formed this association for the purpose of promoting shooting in Americans and firearms training. On June 21, 1873, the first shooting contest was held by the NRA in Creedmoor, New York. During the late 1800's they promoted these firearm competitions among the youth and hosted several more shooting events. One of the NRA's accomplishments was the promotion of shooting sports in kids. In 1906 they had about 200 boys competing. The shooting games continued to grow each year, becoming more and more popular. Now, more than one million kids compete in these competitions. In 1916, the NRA bought the magazine Arms and the man. After buying it they changed it's name to The American Rifleman in June of 1923, becoming the official magazine of the NRA. This magazine is very popular today. It includes the newest firearms, firearm comparisons, and firearm bills and debates that interest thousands of Americans who subscribe to it. In the year 1949, the NRA turned its focus to a new topic. In addition to the training, education, and marksmanship they were teaching, they started working in the hunting community. They developed the first hunter's safety course. This course was designed to teach kids and adults the safe hunting techniques. With this new training, the sport of hunting grew rapid. Today, because of the initial step in hunter safety hunting is the safest sport in America, thanks to the NRA. Moving up on the NRA's list of priorities was the training of law enforcement in 1960. They became the largest instructor of police officers, training around 10,000 up to today. In addition to law enforcement, the NRA remains the top leader in gun training. They have 50,000 certified instructors that train 750,000 gun owners each year. It wasn't until the 1990's when the NRA started becoming concerned with politics. They support the second amendment that Americans have a right to bear arms. They fight gun control laws and support pro-gun people and other pro-gun organizations. There stand against Obama and his gun control plans, and fight for the right of the American people.
