Barack Hussein Obama
“We need to look more closely at a culture that all-too often glorifies violence.”
Barack Obama was born on August 4, 1961 in Honolulu, Hawaii. He is currently the 44th president and the first black president of the United States. He was first inaugurated on January 20, 2009 after winning over republican John McCain. After his four year term, he ran again for president against Mitt Romney. After winning over Mitt Romney he was inaugurated for the second time on January 20, 2013 where he will serve his next four terms. Becoming the first African American president is perhaps the greatest accomplishment for Obama, and may even been the greatest accomplishment for the African American race. On July 20, 2012 a gunman went into a movie theater and shot and killed 12 people while injuring 58 others. This sparked the beginning of the mass shooting conflict we are faced with right now. Then on December 14, 2012 another gunman went into an elementary school and killed 6 adults and 20 children. After this Obama spoke out to the American people wanting immediate action. He has been working with his vice president and other members of the government to develop strict gun laws to prevent firearms from falling into the hands of the wrong people. 33 days after the Sandy Hook school shooting Obama came forth and announced his 23 part plan to end mass shootings like the recent ones that have occurred. Facing opposition from the large pro gun association the NRA, it is difficult for the laws to be passed. The NRA has millions of members and supporters that don't want stricter gun laws. They fight for the right of the second amendment. Right now Obama is still fighting against them to ensure the safety of the children of American citizens.
