Michael Bloomberg
Michael Bloomberg was born February 14th, 1942 in Boston. He is the mayor of New York City, and most noteworthy perhaps, is that he does the job for just one dollar a year. Aside from that though, is that he is an avid supporter of gun control. He is a co-chair of the Mayors Against Illegal Guns coalition, and has managed to drastically reduce the murder rate in New York City. He is one of the most vocal supporters of gun control, and after the Newtown shooting said this,
“With all the carnage from gun violence in our country, it’s still almost impossible to believe that a mass shooting in a kindergarten class could happen, It has come to that. Not even kindergarteners learning their A,B,Cs are safe.” -Bloomberg
Bloomberg has also proposed his own take on gun laws and restrictions, some of which include renewing gun permits every three years, and making shotguns and rifles illegal to carry. This has all resulted in all-time lows for crime in New York City. There were just 418 murders last year in New York City for a population of eight million, compared to 487 murders in Chicago for a population of only two million. New York City had a record high of 2,245 murders in 1990. Furthermore, there were only 1,600 gunshot victims last year, about 200 fewer than the 1,800 victims the number had been around for the last decade.
